How to Convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone, Windows & Mac
A complete guide to converting iPhone HEIC photos to JPG on every platform — no app install required.
If you’ve ever tried to share an iPhone photo only to hear “I can’t open this file,” you’ve encountered the HEIC format. Since iOS 11, Apple has used HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) as the default photo format. While HEIC offers superior compression — about 50% smaller files than JPG at the same quality — it’s not universally supported.
This guide covers every method to convert HEIC to JPG, whether you’re on your iPhone, a Windows PC, or a Mac.
Why Your iPhone Uses HEIC
Apple adopted HEIC because it uses the HEVC (H.265) codec, which compresses images far more efficiently than the JPEG standard from 1992. A typical 12-megapixel iPhone photo takes about 3.5 MB as JPG but only 1.5-2 MB as HEIC — with virtually identical visual quality.
The trade-off? Compatibility. While Apple devices handle HEIC natively, many Windows applications, older Android devices, and web platforms still expect JPG.
Method 1: Convert Directly on iPhone (Fastest)
The fastest approach is converting right on your iPhone using a browser-based tool like iheic.com’s HEIC to JPG converter. Here’s why this matters:
- Open Safari and go to iheic.com
- Tap “Choose from Photos” — iOS will let you select HEIC files directly from your photo library
- Download the JPG — conversion happens instantly in your browser
Since the whole process runs locally via WebAssembly, your photos never leave your device. This is a significant privacy advantage over cloud-based converters.
Method 2: Convert on Windows
Windows 10/11 can display HEIC files if you install the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. But if you need actual JPG files for uploading or sharing:
Option A: Browser-Based (Recommended)
Visit iheic.com/heic-to-jpg, drag and drop your HEIC files, and download JPGs. No software to install, works on any browser, and supports batch conversion of up to 50 files at once.
Option B: Change iPhone Transfer Settings
On your iPhone, go to Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC and select “Automatic.” This tells iOS to convert photos to JPG during USB transfer. The downside: you lose the smaller HEIC file sizes.
Method 3: Convert on Mac
macOS handles HEIC natively, but if you need JPG output:
- Preview: Open the HEIC file → File → Export → Choose JPEG
- Automator: Create a Quick Action for batch conversion
- Browser tool: Same iheic.com approach works on Safari and Chrome
Batch Conversion Tips
When converting multiple photos (e.g., a vacation album), keep these tips in mind:
- Quality 80% is the sweet spot — visually identical to the original with ~70% smaller file size
- Privacy mode automatically strips GPS location data from converted files
- Use “Download All (ZIP)” to get everything in one click
Should You Keep HEIC or Switch to JPG?
For most people, the answer is: keep shooting in HEIC, convert when you need to share. HEIC saves significant storage on your iPhone, and you only need JPG when sharing with non-Apple users or uploading to platforms that don’t support HEIC.
