What is EXIF Metadata?

Every digital photo contains invisible data called EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) metadata. This data is automatically embedded by your camera or smartphone when the photo is taken. iPhone HEIC photos are particularly rich in metadata.

What’s Hidden in Your Photos

CategoryData PointsPrivacy Concern
LocationGPS latitude, longitude, altitude🔴 Reveals exact position
TimeDate, time, timezone🟡 Reveals routine and schedule
DeviceiPhone model, iOS version🟡 Identifies your device
CameraLens, aperture, ISO, shutter speed🟢 Generally harmless
ImageResolution, orientation, color space🟢 Technical data
ThumbnailEmbedded 160×120 preview🟡 May show cropped content

Why Check Metadata Before Sharing?

Most people don’t realize that sharing a photo can reveal:

  • Your home address — a photo taken in your living room contains GPS coordinates accurate to within 10 meters
  • Your daily routine — timestamps show when and where you regularly take photos
  • Your device — knowing your exact iPhone model can be used for targeted phishing

While some social media platforms strip EXIF data on upload (Instagram, Twitter), many others don’t — email, messaging, forums, cloud storage, and online marketplaces often preserve the original metadata intact.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Select a HEIC file from your photo library
  2. View all metadata fields organized by category
  3. Check for sensitive data — look for GPS coordinates and device info
  4. Take action — if you find sensitive data, use our EXIF Remover to strip it

Privacy-First Approach

Cloud-based metadata viewers create an ironic problem: you’re uploading your private photo (with all its metadata) to a third-party server just to check what metadata it contains.

Our tool eliminates this paradox. The HEIC file is parsed entirely within your browser using WebAssembly. No network requests are made. You can verify this by opening your browser’s Developer Tools → Network tab — zero upload activity.

How to View HEIC EXIF Data

2. 🔍 Review metadata groups
